An Angel in the Woods

When I was in high school, I use to spend many weekends with a friend of mine who lived in West Milford. Since neither of us was into watching TV or playing video games, we found ourselves exploring the wooded area that surrounded her parent’s house. There were no trails or paths, so we taught ourselves how to look for landmarks, such as downed trees or rock formations, to find our way back out at the end of the day.

One day we were set out to explore in a different direction not realizing that some of the neighborhood boys had set up a fort there. While accidently stumbling upon it, they decided to scare and chase us away from "their area" of the woods. The problem for us was as we ran away from them we didn't keep track of where we were going. When we finally stopped running, nothing looked familiar and we had little idea as to which direction we should start walking to get back to her house. With the afternoon starting to fade, we began to panic and wandered around. We finally stopped to see if we could recognize any trees or rock formation, something that would help us. Nothing looked familiar and we started to panic a little more.  

As dusk was slowly approaching, I suddenly noticed a shimmery mist out of the corner of my eye. Thinking the light and the surrounding trees could create it I ignored it. I saw it a second time and felt an instinct to follow it. Once I turned towards it, it moved slowly through the woods always about 50 feet from were my friend and I were. Shortly after I began following the shimmery mist, my friend recognized landmarks in the woods.

We found our way home and walked back as I wondered what was it that I really saw wondering through the woods. Was I just imagining it and we got lucky or was it truly an angel helping us find our way out of the wooded area?
