Late Night Encounter at School

January 26, 2013 by Cynthia Leave a Comment
Christ Church, Oxford University

Christ Church, Oxford University

Back in the 1990s I was given a tremendous opportunity to study abroad. For several summer months, I attended Christ Church, Oxford University studying Monasteries and Cathedrals of Medieval England. Not a very practical subject but I found it fascinating.

During my time there, some my classmates and I rotate whose dorm rooms we would study in for the next day’s class. I remember one evening towards the end of my stay, I stayed late studying in my friend’s room which was across the campus from mine. We had our final the next day so I stayed later than usual.

To get back to my room I had to pass the cathedral, under a tower to cross Tom Quad. It was late a little foggy so I was a little uneasy to begin with as I started walking alone back to my room. After all isn’t this how most horror scenes start. The girl walking alone near old stone buildings with plenty of hiding spaces so the murder could hid before jumping out of the shadows.

A murder didn’t jump out at me, but I did see a man as I was walking near the cathedral. A first I thought it was one of the professors taking a late night stroll around the campus until I took closer look. The man had no legs or feet, he was hovering above the ground. Not to mention the strange clothes he was wearing. Just as quick as I saw him, I blinked and he disappeared into thin air.

I quickly ran the passage under the tower and thru Tom Quad all the way back to my dorm room. I stayed there until day light showed itself and I rarely walked the campus at night alone.

For the remainder of my time at school, I never mentioned it to anyone for fear of being ridiculed. However, since then I have read stories of similar encounters there.

Was It Haunted or Just Creepy?

November 4, 2012 by Cynthia Leave a Comment

Once upon a time, I used to travel a lot for work. I would stay in all sorts of hotels due to their proximity to the conference or event I was attending.

A short time ago, I took a business trip out to LA and had the opportunity to stay at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. This hotel’s haunted history, as legend has it, is the last place the Black Dahlia (aka Elizabeth Short) was seen in 1947 before her dismembered body was discovered in a weedy patch south of town. I completely blanked on this fact until I was mentioning to my fiance that I hated passing one of the staircases near my room. I always felt like there was someone standing on the floor above watching me as I walked past it. He reminded me of where I was and that it had a long history.

It was at that point that I started to think about other locations that I stayed in that were creepy and wondered if they too had shady pasts that could have left either residual energies behind.

There was one location in NYC that I stayed in. It was a small boutique hotel not to far from where my conference was being held. From the moment I saw it I had an uneasy feeling about it, but I attributed it to the fact that it was under construction and in an unfamiliar part of the city and it was getting dark. I checked in and went up to my room on the third floor. The elevator was small and smelled a little funny. The worst was when I stepped off of the elevator onto my floor. I was met with something that made me feel so uncomfortable, I ran to my room.

Mind you this, was years before I learned how to set boundaries with entities and how to protect myself and my space. I went to the evening conference event and returned around 11:00 because I had an early start the next day. Again, I reached my floor and was met with the uneasy feeling I had as I got off of the elevator. As a light sleeper, I could hear footsteps pacing up and down the hall. However, I never found anyone in the halls when I would look out my door. The next two nights, I had similar experiences.

Back then, I didn’t have the nerve to ask the hotel staff what it may have been for fear of being ridiculed so to this day, I still don’t know if the hotel was haunted or just creepy.

Working in a Haunted Location

July 22, 2012 by Cynthia Leave a Comment

Many years ago, I worked in a haunted location. For over two years, I would encounter or hear of co-workers having encounters with an old woman who perished in a fire in the original house. The original house was knocked down and a larger one was built in its place. About 20 years ago, the house was converted into an office for our company. My desk was on the second floor located within the floor plan of the original house. Our desks were cubicles with six foot partitions to create a small space of our own.

While there, this woman made her presence known in several ways.

The first sign was phantom breezes and rustling of papers. Some coworkers would hear papers moving on my desk and walk around the corner to speak with me. More than once, they found my area empty because I was either out of the office or on the first floor. This was one of the most common occurrences.

The next common occurrence we encountered were phantom footsteps on the second floor. This happened during our late night meetings in the first floor conference room. Many times, we would be waiting for the meeting to start and hear someone walking knowing that no one was upstairs. The footsteps were easier to hear at night because the office was quiet and it was easier to hear.

I had a great experience with her although it only happened one time. I was having a bit of a stressful day, which was an oddity for me with this position. I had crazy days but I rarely felt stressed. Before my my boss stepped out for lunch,  she gave me a few words of encouragement to help me push through the issue at hand. I went back to my desk with her words ringing in my ear and I started to work thru what I needed to do. I soon started to let it get to me again but instead of hearing words, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I thought it was my boss who had come over to offer some additional encouragement, however I was surprised when I turned around to find that I couldn’t see anyone there. Was this the woman providing her support and encouragement just like my boss.

Maybe one day I will have the honor of investigating the location to know exactly what I experienced but until then, I will only have experiences to explain what or who is there.

What Class EVP Is It?

June 2, 2012 by Cynthia Leave a Comment

Over the years, I have captured more EVPs than any other type of evidence of the paranormal. Some are faint whispers barely audible to the human ear and others are crystal clear and loud. Many people don’t realize that the clarity and audibility can place an EVP into different categories or classifications. It’s is a grading system and is subject to what the person hears and how they interpret it. Here are general guidelines I use for EVP classifications along with examples of EVPs I have captured over the years.

Class A EVP

A “Class A EVP” is clear and distinct. It is loud enough that you can make out what is being said and usually does not require headphones.

Below are two examples of what I consider to be a “Class A EVP”.

The first was captured at Fort Mifflin in 2011 in the Torpedo Room.

FM Torpedo Part 2 – Get Out

The second was captured in 2012 at a church in New Jersey.

EVP of Man in the Basement

Class B EVP

A “Class B EVP” is distinct and loud however not everything is completely audible. It may require some amplification or filtering and use of headphones.

Captured in 2010 at the Union Cemetery, this “Class B EVP” is of a child-like voice behind myself and my fellow investigator, Dave. I classified it as a “Class B EVP” because although you can clearly hear someone, you can’t absolutely understand what it is being said.

Union Cemetery 9 18 2010 5

This “Class B EVP” was captured in 2010 at Merchant & Drovers Tavern Museum.

Tavern EVP 15 Be Quiet

Class C EVP

A “Class C EVP” is undecipherable or unintelligible. It is clear that the EVP is not created by a living person but you can not make out what is being said even with amplifying or filtering the message. Below is an example of what I consider to be a “Class C EVP”.

This EVP was captured Mansfield Cemetery in 2011. Note: This audio clip has been enhanced so that you can hear it.

Top 5 EVPS for 2011

December 29, 2011 by Cynthia Leave a Comment
Top 5 EVPs of 2011

Top 5 EVPs of 2011 Every year, I review all the great places I have investigated and the evidence I have captured. I also choose and share my top favorites. In 2011, I had some really great EVPs so it was difficult to choose, however, I’ve managed to choose my top five favorite EVPs for 2011.

EVP 1 – Casemate 4, Fort Mifflin

Dave and I were investigating Casemate 4 where he had a personal experience where the light of a window was blocked by something. We quickly ruled out our shadows because I was not in the room nor was he moving. While trying to see what it could be, we were joined by some of the boys who were asking questions about our equipment. The following EVPs or Electronic Voice Phenomimums were captured during this conversation.

(Note: the audio has been enhanced. It is best to listen with headphones on.)

FM CM 4 – My Fortress

EVP 2 – Torpedo Room – Fort Mifflin

During the my May visit to For Mifflin, I also investigated the Torpedo Room. While there everything seemed to be quiet. However, once I reviewed the audio, I found the following EVP.

(Note: the audio has been enhanced. It is best to listen with headphones on.)

FM Torpedo Part 2 – Get Out

EVP 3 – By the Castner Family Tombstones – Mansfield Cemetery

My fellow investigators and I started the evening at the location of the Castner family, we started to ask questions about their lives and the day they were murdered. A small piece of grass was moving between the two right stones. There wasn’t a breeze around and it was just a single piece of grass which moved. As soon as Jasmine observed the movement had stopped, two of our recorders captured the following EVPs.

(Note: the audio has been enhanced. It is best to listen with headphones on.)

Mansfield Cemetery – Grass Stopped Moving 1 EVP

EVP 4 – Whistling  – A Historic Warren Building

During an fundraiser investigation at a historical building in Warren County, I was on the first floor asking questions about the organ which is on display there. I captured an unexplained whistle which I did not hear during that evening. To add validity to this, I also captured this whistle on my video recorder.

(Note: the audio has been enhanced. It is best to listen with headphones on.)

Warren EVP 7

EVP 5 – A Man Amongst Us – Merchant & Drovers Tavern Museum

The Merchant Drovers Tavern museum was four floors for us to investigate. On the fourth floor, we explored the room where all the period costumes were stored.  My fellow investigator, Tom was the last to enter the room as I lead the way. He was telling us about a previous experience in the room. After he finished his story, I heard a male voice say something. You can also hear me reacting to it by asking Tom if he had just said something. He hadn’t. Upon review, another man’s voice was captured adding validity to the experience.

(Note: the audio has been enhanced. It is best to listen with headphones on.)

As the year comes to a close, I wish all of you a Happy and Safe New Year.

It Is Your Reputation as a Paranormal Investigator!

December 1, 2011 by Cynthia Leave a Comment

In a field where there are no clear cut rules or guidelines, people must use commonsense and objectivity when collecting, analyzing, and presenting evidence. I have watched the evidence presented by numerous groups and TV shows. One thing that always baffled me – how can they discount orbs as airborne particulates, yet they are the first ones to post them as verification of paranormal activity when there is a lack of other evidence.

My rule that I use when presenting orbs as evidence is to have cooperating evidence to accompany it. I suggest an EVP or at least personal experiences. I would say that if the orb is all you have, you can’t claim it as paranormal. There are too many airborne particulates that could create the same effect.

The only orb I have ever claimed as paranormal was captured in 2010 in Casematefor-mif-2010-05-15 photo casemate 11 11, Fort Mifflin. While there, I had a feeling that someone was standing on the other side of the doorway peering around to see what we were up to. So I snapped a picture which captured to be a large orb slightly hidden behind the wall. Before I presented this as paranormal evidence, I had a skeptic on my team take a look at it. He couldn’t explain what caused it because it is a substantial size and it is partially covered by the wall.

I have numerous other pictures which have orbs in them, but because I have no other evidence to prove that is definitely paranormal and not not just an airborne particulate.

As an investigators, your reputation is all you have to stake you claims on so, my advice, be careful what you claim so that your reputation stays intact.

Just An Angry Man

September 8, 2011 by Cynthia Leave a Comment

Hallway of Angry Man

People who experience or investigate the paranormal know that there is the good, the bad and the ugly. The bad and the ugly I refer to is the angry and evil entities which are around. It took me many years to recognize that there are many differences between the bad and the ugly.

When I was younger I didn’t understand the difference so I lumped them all together in the same scary category.  However, over the years of research and investigations, I have learned to differentiate between the two.

There is one particular entity I have dealt with most of my life. When I was younger, he was confrontational and challenging. I misread his “get out” attitude as the behavior of an evil being. He never harmed anyone, however he gave you an unwelcoming feeling until you vacated his space. As I learned more about my personal experiences with the paranormal I was given an insight that this person wasn’t evil. He just wanted to be left alone and to keep everyone out of his space.

A few years ago, I learned to talk to him as I entered his space. I announced who I was, what my intentions were and how long I would be there. This helped ease the confrontational attitude he had.

For example, some friends and I created a haunted house as a fundraiser for the church. Part of the exhibit was in his area including the hallway and several classrooms. Before setting up, I explained what we were doing and why we were doing it. That evening I felt him watching the transformation of the regular hallway and rooms into a prison cells and vampires lair.

During the entire event, I was left by myself in the last room of the haunted house. Although I had been on investigations before, this was different because this was someone I grew up being afraid of. I was happy that I was not harassed by him once throughout the evening, although I sensed him checking in on his space.

Since then, I have announced myself and my intentions to him. This appeases him because when I do this, I don’t get challenged. He just quietly watches as I go about my business.

The Return of My Cookie Monster

August 7, 2011 by Cynthia Leave a Comment

My Cookie Monster

Over eight years ago, I received a fabulous gift for my birthday. Her name was Cookie. I also called her my Cookie Monster. She was a black and white cat adopted from a local shelter. When you flipped her over onto her back, her stomach looked like a big Oreo cookie.

I didn’t have kids, so she became my first child and after some life changes, she became the closest thing I would ever come to it. She was never shy; she always hung out with me whether or not there were other people in the house. At night time, she always followed me to the bedroom and curled up by my feet to sleep. I loved having her around and felt the unconditional love only a pet like that could provide.

In 2009, she started loosing weight and with little explanation from the vets office, I did what I could to keep her going. However, by the end of 2010, her body gave out and it was time to say goodbye to my baby girl. That morning I kept telling her that I loved her and that I would see her again on the other side. After all, I hunt ghosts, so of course I believed that I would see her again.

I should have known what would happen next but I never thought it would have been possible. I woke up in the middle of the night a few weeks after putting Cookie down. I walked out of my bedroom door and looked down the hall and couldn’t believe what I saw. There sitting by my grandfather’s writing desk was a small white shadow in the same location Cookie use to like to sit in. From that spot she could see not only down the stairs but down the  hallway as well.

Cookie Sleeping in the Sun!

I halfheartedly figured out what it was that night but I shrugged it off as part of my sleepy imagination and the wishing of her return. It wasn’t until a few days later that I got confirmation it was her. I had just settled into bed and my other two cats were sleeping soundly in other areas of the house. Without the noise of the cat-door opening, I felt a cat jump on the bed and settle into the same spot which Cookie claimed every night. I looked immediately to see which cat is was and to my surprise there wasn’t one there.

After this happened several times in a few weeks, I finally allowed myself to believe that it was Cookie. The next time it happened, I whispered, “Good night Cookie Monster, I love you,” and then I drifted off to a peaceful sleep.

What Classification Of Haunting Is It?

January 21, 2011 by Cynthia 3 Comments

So if you are like I am, you watch several of the paranormal shows on TV and spend time researching the paranormal. I always wonder why most people only really talk about two types of haunting – residual or intelligent. There are at least six different types of haunting I have come across.

Residual Haunting

A residual haunting is when an entity replays a specific activity or time period over and over like video or audio loop. These phenomena are attributed to a traumatic event, life-altering event, or a routine event of a person or place. The entity doesn’t show signs of awareness of the living world, nor do they interact with or respond to it.

Intelligent Haunting

An intelligent Haunting is when an entity appears to be aware of the living world and interacts with or responds to it. These entities are able to communicate with the living by talking, moving inanimate objects or making noises.

Demonic

A demonic haunting is especially frightening because the spirit that does the haunting was not human and has malicious or evil intent. These haunting start with small paranormal events, but they will escalate over time. Some studies of demonic hauntings have concluded that these types of spirits like to attack individuals that are experiencing weaknesses on a psychological and emotional level.

Poltergeist

Most poltergeist activity has nothing to do with ghosts or spirits. Most of the activity is centered around an individual who has experienced emotional, psychological or physical stress (even going through puberty). The subconscious mind of that individual can manifest these events. Phenomena can be displayed as unexplained noises, objects moving or manipulation of lights or electrical appliances.

Shadow People

Shadow people  are supernatural shadow-like figures of both modern folklore and paranormal popular culture that believers describe as dark humanoid forms or evasive spectators that are seen mostly in the peripheral vision. They are commonly regarded as malicious or evil spirits.

Doppelgängers

A doppelgänger is said to be a person’s double. It describes the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection. Doppelgängers are often perceived as a sinister form of bilocation and generally regarded as harbingers of bad luck. In one legend, a doppelgänger seen by a person’s friends or relatives is an omen of ill will, while seeing one’s own doppelgänger is an omen of death.
